Valorising anaerobic digestates into bio-fertilisers for climate friendly agricolture
LIFE DIMITRA, co-funded by the EU LIFE programme, aims to develop innovative technologies for the sustainable management of agricultural digestate from biogas production. The project involves partners from Italy, Greece, Poland, and Cyprus to recover reusable water and produce different bio-based fertiliser formulations that will be tested and validated at farm level. These technologies will be demonstrated at two sites located in Greece (DEMO 1) and Italy (DEMO 2) in existing and operational anaerobic digestion (AD) plants.
LabICAB is responsible for the design and operation of the DEMO 2 system, located at the AD plant of the Consortium Agricultural Society “La Torre” (Isola della Scala, VR). To improve the efficiency of the final reverse osmosis (RO) system, solids and nutrients are removed and concentrated from anaerobic digestate by inserting sequential filtration stages upstream. The resulting RO permeate, essentially water, can be reused in the anaerobic digestion unit or for irrigation purposes.
