Valorisation of slaughterhouse and pulp and paper waste to produce cost-efficient PHAs for agricultural and personal care application

ELLIPSE is an Innovation Action project funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). The project aims to valorize slaughterhouse waste and sludge from the paper and pulp industry into high-value products: polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) for packaging and agricultural sectors and bio-based fertilizers (BBFs). ELLIPSE has brought together 13 partners from 8 countries with expertise in waste production and management, technology development, industrial operations, and market development.

LabICAB is responsible for the development of one of ELLIPSE’s three pilot plants, which will recover nitrogen and phosphorus from anaerobic fermentate using membrane-based technologies. The recovered nutrients will be processed into controlled-release fertilisers.
