Comparative evaluation of plant configurations through process simulation of an existing wastewater treatment plant

Objective

Comparative assessment of the expected performance of various plant configurations proposed for the revamping and optimization of the existing plant, ensuring operational continuity during the works and improving environmental, energy, and management performance and operational flexibility.

Approach

A functional study of four alternative configurations, based on the following performance indicators:

  • energy savings;
  • production and quality of sewage sludge;
  • consumption of phosphate removal reagent;
  • quality of discharged effluent;
  • operating costs.

Results

The optimal configuration with respect to the indicators enabled greater flexibility in management with regard to:

  • seasonality;
  • variable loads;
  • savings or quality objectives.
