Assessment of biological treatability and advanced treatment of industrial wastewater (petrochemical sector)

Assessment of biological treatability and advanced treatment of industrial wastewater (petrochemical sector)

Objective

Optimization of COD and nitrogen removal from complex wastewater.

Approach

  • chemical and physical characterization of incoming and outgoing wastewater;
  • assessment of wastewater biodegradability through respirometric tests;
  • assessment of advanced treatments (adsorption-PAC, GAC, zeolites) and advanced oxidation (ozone) on the removal of organic contaminants.

Results

The wastewater is biologically treatable, but requires pre-treatment to reduce COD and nitrogen.
Advanced combined treatments are more effective for the simultaneous removal of organic contaminants.
